Fuseta
A small base that still works — if your evenings are already spoken for.
Around two thousand residents, a working harbour, and a lagoon crossing that only runs half the year. A village at its actual size, which is either the point or the problem.
A village at its actual size
Around 2,000 permanent residents, a working harbour, and a lagoon crossing to the barrier-island beach that only operates from March to October1. In the winter half of the year, the Atlantic side of the village is scenery.
What you get in exchange is a town that is not performing. The lunch places serve residents, the market is a grocery run rather than an attraction, and the nightlife is Nanobrew — one nanobrewery that opens Friday to Sunday for about four hours and closes at nine.
Where to eat, specifically
Delícias da Taci runs no fixed menu: three options each day — meat, fish, vegetarian — so nobody in a group is stuck and nobody gets bored. Restaurante Casa Corvo is the more expensive one and earns it, particularly on seafood. Restaurante Crispim is neither, in the best way: cosy, solid, completely Portuguese. For dinner, Fuzeta Tapas do Nik and Restaurante O Coral, the latter with regional food at a fair price and occasional live music. Bread comes from the village bakeries, or from Madeira Madeira as early as seven in the morning.
The arrangement that makes it work
POMAR na Praia sits about ten minutes from the sand and runs October to April. The village supports that arrangement well and would not support a solo apartment rental nearly as well — which is the single most useful thing to know before booking here.
Who it is wrong for
Anybody arriving alone with no built-in social arrangement, and anybody planning a stay around swimming between November and February.
